Daily Devotion Saturday December 30, 2006
This week's devotions are written by Seminarian Kelsay Parker. We will be
journeying into a "post-Christmas" question: "What child is this?" Turning
to Jesus himself to learn more about whom this Savior is who has come into
the world.
What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary's lap is sleeping?
whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?
John 11:25-26
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in
me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in
me will never die."
Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life
What would happen if before we spoke we asked ourselves, "are these words
life-giving?" So often our words become weapons against the people in our
lives. So often we are overcome with anger, or fear, or exhaustion and we
say things that hurt the ones we love. It is all to clear the power those
words have to kill the spirit, to injure the heart, and wound our
self-worth.
What words are life-giving? Jesus' words. "I am the resurrection and the
life." A promise we can trust, a hope we can cling to, "those who believe
in me, even though they die, will live." Trusting in a "life-giving
promise" we can in turn, speak life-giving words to the world - "I love you;
I'm sorry; Forgive me."
What child is this? This child is Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life.
This, this is Christ the king, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary
