Daily Devotion Friday February 10, 2006
The daily devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig. The theme this
week is "Healing."
Luke 5:18-25
And behold, men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they
sought to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; but finding no way to
bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him
down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. And when
he saw their faith he said, "Man, your sins are forgiven you." And the
scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, "Who is this that
speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only?" When Jesus
perceived their questionings, he answered them, "Why do you question in
your hearts? Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven you,' or to
say, Rise and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of man has
authority on earth to forgive sins" -- he said to the man who was paralyzed
-- "I say to you, rise, take up your bed and go home." And immediately he
rose before them, and took up that on which he lay, and went home,
glorifying God.
Thought
Friends are a source of healing. Over my life time, friends have reached
out to me in times of sickness and sorrow. They have gone out of their way
to be there for me and my family. Friends are a sign of the goodness and
the presence of Gods healing mercy.
In the Gospel text above, Jesus miraculously heals the paralyzed man.
Equally significant is the role of the people who were also in attendance.
There were those who used the occasion to find fault and criticize. And
there were those who were true friends of the man. They carried him up onto
the roof and knocked a hole in the roof to lower him close to Jesus. They
were persistent and willing to take risks for the sake of their friend. They
were agents of healing.
Today you will be faced with the choice of either complaining and
criticizing, or taking risks to be a friend to another who is in need of
healing friendship. Jesus has taught us by example that the later brings
joy. Climb on the roof! Knock a hole in the roof and put yourself out for
another today. Miracles can and will result!
