Daily Devotions Monday February 13, 2006

This weeks’ devotions are written by Pastor Dave Hendricks.

1 Thessalonians 4:9

Now concerning love of the brothers and sisters, you do not need to have
anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one
another…

Thought

Henry Nouwen once wrote, “Without the solitude of heart, our relationships
with others easily become needy and greedy, sticky and clinging, dependent
and sentimental, exploitive and parasitic, because without the solitude of
heart we cannot experience the others as different from ourselves but only
as people who can be used for the fulfillment of our own, often hidden
needs.”

We often talk about needing other people. We seemed to have been designed
to live life as communal creatures. Nouwen rightly points out though that
our relationships with others cannot be based upon neediness. Instead, we
seem to be at our best with others when we can rest within our very self. We
do not seem to be able to have healthy relationships with others if have not
come be comfortable in our own skin. We cannot love our neighbor if we have
not found the way to love our own being. .

Do you like yourself? Do you have an abiding love for yourself as one of
God’s children?

Prayer

We do not always understand all our behaviors or actions Lord. Help us to
believe in your love for us and to come love ourselves in the ways you love
us. We ask this of you so that we might truly others as you would have us
love them. Amen.
