Daily Devotions Wednesday February 15, 2006
The Daily Devotions are this week are written by Pastor Dave Hendricks.
1 Timothy 6: 6-8
Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment, for
we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it;
but if we have food and clothing we will be content with these.
Thought
"Osuna says that God plays a game with the soul called 'the loser wins'; a
game in which the one who holds the poorest cards does best. The Pharisee's
consciousness that he had such an excellent hand really prevented him from
taking a single trick." The Spiritual life by Evelyn Underhill
We live in a culture that continues to promote the idea of getting more and
growing larger in many areas of life. We promote, and dare I say have
exported, this mind set of getting more and being more. We have somehow
found the word "contentment" to be a word with which we equate it to
"laziness" or "a lack of productivity". If we were able to be content with
even a little less would not the possibility exist that many more might have
a little more?
I think it is hard work to learn to be content. It takes a great deal of
practice to be content with being satisfied with less. Today would be a
good day to take some time and make a list of the things we truly need as
opposed to all that we have.
Prayer
Gracious God, we often fail to seek ways to be content with our walk on this
planet. We ask you to help us learn to be satisfied and content in the
knowledge of your presence in our lives. Amen.
