Daily Devotions Thursday February 16, 2006

The Daily Devotions are this week are written by Pastor Dave Hendricks.

Philippians 3: 10-14

I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of
his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain
the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or
have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because
Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have
made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and
straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the
prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.

Thought

Richard Foster in Freedom from Simplicity writes, "Mother Teresa of Calcutta
said, 'Pray for me that I not loosen my grip on the hands of Jesus even
under the guise of ministering to the poor.' That is our first task: to grip
the hands of Jesus with such tenacity that we are obliged to follow his
lead, to seek his Kingdom."

Foster goes on to encourage us to obey Jesus in every way possible.
Sometimes I think I am afraid that if I hold on too hard that Jesus will let
go of me. He will be forced to let go of me because I squeeze so tightly
that I injure his hand. I will cause so much pain that I will force him to
let go of me. The thing I forget far too often is that I will cause him
more pain if I don't hold onto his hand with all my might. I need to hold
on, not because he will let go of me, but because I have a tendency to let
go of Jesus. I want to pull away from him like a child refusing to remain in
the grasp of a loving and caring parent walking in a strange place. I need
to hold on so that I can realize that I am going where Jesus is going.

Are you holding on to Jesus?

Prayer

We can do no work on your behalf unless we are holding the hand of Jesus.

God help us to hold tightly to the hands of Jesus. Amen.
