Daily Devotions Friday February 17, 2006

The Daily Devotions are this week are written by Pastor Dave Hendricks.

Colossians 1: 3-6

In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that
you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.
You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel that
has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole
world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard
it and truly comprehended the grace of God.

Thought

In the book, "Practicing Right Relationships" the authors point out that
"life-giving relationships happen neither automatically nor magically. They
are created by people who make the choice to be open, authentic, caring and
curious with each other". They go on to point out that "right relationships
are a vehicle through which God works and effects change in the world. The
stronger and healthier our relationships, the clearer channels they can be
for what God wants to birth in the world."

Such relationships come about when people seek to live in a community that
embraces and respects a wide diversity of opinions and perspectives. In a
Christian community people hear the other even if they can not agree with
them. In Christian community we stand with one another and walk with one
another. We remain individuals, while walking hand-in-hand with each other.
We are born into a community of faith in Holy Baptism.

We are called to work at being and becoming community. We will often be
satisfied to live in pseudo-communities that promote a feel good environment
instead of a feel God one. Why?

Prayer

Almighty God, you have called the church into being and gathered us into a
sacred community. By the power of your Holy Spirit help us to live in unity
and peace. May our actions be the fruit of our faith in your kingdom.
Amen.
