Daily Devotion Monday January 9, 2006

We are now in the churchly season of Epiphany. This word comes from the
Greek (remember that the New Testament was first written in Greek) which
means to "shine a light upon "or to "make known." During this season before
the arrival of Lent, we remember that in Jesus is the light of the world and
that through him God's salvation is made known to ALL people. The devotions
this week are written by Pastor Ludwig who explores the Epiphany theme of
"light."

Genesis 1:3

- Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. -

As we think about the light of God, perhaps the best place to begin is at
the beginning! In the Genesis 1 creation account, the author states that
the very first thing God creates is light (even before he creates the sun
and the moon and the stars). One can hardly begin such a project in the
dark! We need light in order to be and do the things that are at the center
of our lives.. We need light in order to know joy and fullness. There are
many people who suffer from seasonal affective disorder The shortened days
and lack of sunshine impacts their energy and emotional levels. Are you
more moody during the northern winters? I suspect that we all are.

But God says, let there be light! This light is more than the warming
photons of a star we call the sun. This light is the saving and redeeming
love of a Savior we call the SON. This light drew to it the wise men from
the east. This light threatened all of the rulers and powers of darkness.
This light is our Savior, Jesus Christ who shines mercy and love upon all
creation. There may not be much sunlight in Southeast Michigan this week,
but the Sonlight will be dazzling.
