Daily Devotion Tuesday January 10, 2006

We are now in the churchly season of Epiphany. This word comes from the
Greek (remember that the New Testament was first written in Greek) which
means to "shine a light upon "or to "make known." During this season before
the arrival of Lent, we remember that in Jesus is the light of the world and
that through him God's salvation is made known to ALL people. The devotions
this week are written by Pastor Ludwig who explores the Epiphany theme of
"light."

Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the
stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Like most young children, I was afraid of the dark. I held the irrational
belief that at night, crocodiles lived under my bed and were eagerly waiting
to nibble on my toes should they get too close to where the dust bunnies
dwelt. I was often afraid to go to bed at night (something my brother used
to great advantage in tormenting me). While I no longer am afraid of that
kind of darkness, there are many more real "darknesses" that could paralyze
my joy and make me pull the covers of daily life over my trembling head.

The psalmist reminds us this Epiphany season that our God is a god of light
not darkness. He sent his Son Jesus to conquer the darkness that would keep
us shivering between the sheets. In him the light of forgiveness shines and
because of him we can face whatever will confront us today with hope and
confident trust and tonight before you go to bed, say your prayers and stick
your feet under the edge of the bed and wiggle your toes at the darkness!
