Daily Devotion Thursday 12 2006
We are now in the churchly season of Epiphany. This word comes from the
Greek (remember that the New Testament was first written in Greek) which
means to "shine a light upon "or to "make known." During this season before
the arrival of Lent, we remember that in Jesus is the light of the world and
that through him God's salvation is made known to ALL people. The devotions
this week are written by Pastor Ludwig who explores the Epiphany theme of
"light."
Isaiah 9:2
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt
in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.
I rise early on Sunday mornings in complete darkness. I am careful to not
make too much noise or turn on overhead lights since it is the only morning
of the week that Karen can actually sleep in later than me. Several months
ago, when I got to church I realized that I was wearing the pants from one
suit and the suit top from another. Apparently, in the darkness I reached in
the closet and grabbed a coat from the wrong hanger.
Our lives are often filled with the darkness of exhaustion, frustration,
pain, or doubt. Some days when the alarm goes off we arise as tired as when
we put our heads on the pillow the night before. It is easy to see how we
can wind up wearing mixed emotions! God announces to his people that
darkness will not prevail. Light, His light, has the upper hand. No matter
how deep the darkness or mismatched our emotional wardrobe, God's light has
dawned and the promise of his strength and mighty love is being worked out
this day in us! Let God turn the light on for you today as you grab your
coat!
