Daily Devotion Friday January 13, 2006

We are now in the churchly season of Epiphany. This word comes from the
Greek (remember that the New Testament was first written in Greek) which
means to "shine a light upon "or to "make known." During this season before
the arrival of Lent, we remember that in Jesus is the light of the world and
that through him God's salvation is made known to ALL people. The devotions
this week are written by Pastor Ludwig who explores the Epiphany theme of
"light."

John 8:12

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who
follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Several years ago I received a phone call. The caller identified himself and
began trying to sell me a product. I politely said that I was not interested
but he kept talking as though I had not even spoken. Again, I indicated that
I had no interest until finally with a blush on my face I realized that it
was a very, very lifelike recording. In a sense I had been duped.

Today there are a lot of philosophies and spiritualities that claim to have
the light. At first blush they appeal to our sensitivities, prejudices and
perspectives. They are almost always about ideas or about our own "inner
truths." They are not real. Those who look to such spirituality have been
duped. The true light is not an idea, He is a person. The true light does
not emanate from within us, He shines upon us. Jesus claims that he is the
light of the world. He is true God and true man. He has come to not only
show the way for a meaningful life, He has paid the toll at the cross of
Calvary. Today, bask in the light of his love and let Him show you the way.
