Daily Devotion Wednesday January 18, 2006

Snow has been a favorite topic of conversation in these parts recently.
Because there is so strangely little of it this year, such conversation
provokes either joy (for those who see little value in snow) or sorrow (for
those who love to play in snow). How does Scripture use the word and idea of
snow?

Isaiah 55: 10-11

"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and return not thither
but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the
sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes forth from my
mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which
I purpose, and prosper in the thing for which I sent it."

At times it does appear as though life is nothing more than a collection of
random events. Watching the daily news can make it seem as though we live in
the middles of a completely random and chaotic world. Our own lives can
sometimes seem like little more than bouncing from one crisis to another. We
could give up. We could yield to an Epicurean outlook of "eat, drink and be
merry because tomorrow..who knows!" Or, we could listen to the words of God
through the prophet Isaiah who announces that even the snow has a good
purpose by watering the earth and bringing promise for future life in the
Spring.

God's creative word is His intention of good for you and me. It may seem
like chaos is in charge but that is not true. Our Creator who sent His only
Son Jesus to redeem and save us, not only sends snow to water the creation,
but sends strength and forgiveness to make sense out of this day and live in
it with purpose and hope. If you live in Southern Michigan, look out your
window and look at the newly fallen snow. Let it remind you, that God has
strength and purpose for you today!
