Daily Devotion Tuesday January 24, 2006

The daily devotions this week are written by Zion member Dale Eckart, who
looks at answers to the question, "What must I do?"

John 3:16 and Mark 9:23-24

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

Jesus said, "Everything is possible for him who believes."

Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my
unbelief!"

In the story from Mark, a father has come to Jesus to ask for his healing
help. He is trying to be humble, saying, "if there is anything you can do
for him." Jesus declares that all things are possible, through faith.

All things? Even the really tricky ones, like curing disease, or saving us
from death? How big does my faith have to be, in the face of such large
challenges?

The boy's father was honest with himself, and with his Lord. He believed,
and also knew that he struggled with doubts and reservations. We, too, have
doubts and reservations. We have good days where it is easy to see God's
blessings, and bad days where He seems so distant.

What must we do? The boy's father did not have to make a sacrifice to
Jesus, nor pay him a sack full of gold. He needed to believe, and to trust
that Jesus would not only help his son but also that he would strengthen his
faith for tomorrow, and next week, and next year.

Prayer

Lord of life, with so many people trying to persuade or deceive us, it is
hard sometimes to believe your promises. Help us overcome our unbelief, as
it keeps coming back, everyday. Amen.
