Daily Devotion Thursday January 26, 2006

The daily devotions this week are written by Zion member Dale Eckart, who
looks at answers to the question, "What must I do?"

Matthew 28:19-20

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to
obey everything I have commanded you.

Jesus spoke these words to his disciples at the very end of the time he
spent with them. Although they would continue to come to him in prayer, and
he promised to send a Comforter

-- the Holy Spirit -- to them, they would no longer see him face-to-face.

The nature of their faith was about to change. They would need to keep
believing, to keep trusting what God has promised, even though they would
not hear a fresh word of hope each morning, or see Jesus' smiling face to
reassure them. It would be tempting to just sit back, after he was gone,
and reflect on his words. The Romans and Pharisees were still none too happy
with Jesus' ideas; perhaps we should take it easy, refill our spiritual
lamps, and just keep the faith.

But they didn't do that...they heeded Jesus' command, even though he was not
physically present to urge them on. In faith, they took the good news out to
Jews and Gentiles, kings and slaves, needed to hear it.

What must I do? Get up and go. Take your faith with you, into places where
people might not expect to see you acting or speaking faithfully. Share
your hopes, and share how God is helping you with your fears.

Prayer

Risen Lord, you have sent us out with your good news. Let us hear the
Spirit's whispers, and heed the Spirit's nudging, so that we pass on your
gospel to a hurting world. Amen.
