Daily Devotion Friday January 27, 2006
The daily devotions this week are written by Zion member Dale Eckart, who
looks at answers to the question, "What must I do?"
Romans 3:28
For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from observing the
law.
I often listen to National Public Radio, and they have an ongoing series
called "This I Believe." The series is a collection of essays, read aloud
by the authors, that are submitted by listeners from all walks of life. If
I were to submit such an essay, I think that "justified by grace through
faith" would have to be the core of it.
This idea stands in stark contrast to self-improvement books, motivational
tapes & videos, and other tools that teach us we can do anything, learn
anything, through our own brainpower and sweat. There is indeed a lot which
humans can achieve, in science and sport and the arts. There will be amazing
feats performed soon in the Winter Olympics. But there is one thing we
cannot do alone.
One of my favorite contemporary Christian singing groups is "Lost and
Found," who just happen to be Lutheran. They have a song which includes the
line, "It's nothing that you can do/ It's something already done for you."
In our baptism, we've been marked with the cross of Christ forever. God's
promises apply to us.
So, what must I do? Nothing. God has given this to us; we can't earn it,
and we don't have to. Salvation comes through faith in something we cannot
achieve on our own, faith in Him.
Prayer
Gracious Father, help us remember that you have called us, you have gathered
us, and you have justified us by your wondrous gift.
Amen.
