Daily Devotion Monday January 30, 2006
The daily devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig, who during this
week of predicted cloudiness in Southeast Michigan, looks at Biblical
references to clouds.
Psalm 36:5 Thy steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, thy
faithfulness to the clouds.
With Southeast Michigan receiving approximately 190 cloudy to overcast days
per year, we have come to view clouds as far too common and in fact often
unwelcome. In the ancient middle east, where cloudy days are fewer and
farther between, clouds were much more mysterious and in fact reminders of
the power and awe of God.
Standing atop a miniature mountain in Canada with my family some years ago,
we stood under a sunny blue sky with billowing white clouds, while watching
the fast approach of an horizon filled with dark clouds laced with
lightening bolts. I will never forget the twin feelings I had for the
gentleness and the awesome power of nature.
The Psalmist reminds us that God's authority extends both below and above
the clouds. And while life, like the clouds, may bring both light and
darkness, joy and sorrow, God's steadfast love (a special word in the Hebrew
for covenant-love which is unshakeable) and faithfulness will not fail us.
Whatever this cloudy day brings you, God is near and God's love and
faithfulness shall prevail.
