Daily Devotion Tuesday January 31, 2006
The daily devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig, who during this
week of predicted cloudiness in Southeast Michigan, looks at Biblical
references to clouds.
Genesis 9:13-15 I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the
covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and
the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant which is between
me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall
never again become a flood to destroy the earth.
In the Genesis story of the flood, it was not clouds that brought the rain!
God opened the "windows of heaven" to let in the water down and he opened
the "fountains of the deep" to gush the water up. But after the flood is
over, the clouds become the backdrop for the rainbow which is God's sign of
promise.
There are two important ideas wrapped up in the clouds and the rainbow.
First, the word for bow in the Hebrew also means war-bow. God will hang up
his war-bow (notice that it is pointed toward heaven now and not toward you)
and second it is a reminder that God puts in the clouds to remind himself
not to remind you. In the rainbow of the clouds God reminds himself of his
promise to watch over you in faithfulness. When you see the clouds this week
remember that God has tied a string around his finger or posted a note on
his refrigerator or left sticky notes all over heaven about you! God will
not forget his commitment of faithfulness to you.
