Daily Devotions Monday July 3, 2006

This week's devotions are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. In the ancient
world, looking upon the face of another was an act of great intimacy; reason
enough to cover the faces of women from non-household men. It was also an
act of parity; reason enough why the commoner was not allowed to look
directly into the eye of a king. It was an act of power which is why the
Old Testament warned that to look upon the face of God would result in
death. Let's think about faces this week.

Exodus 3: 4-6

When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the
bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here am I." Then he said, "Do not come
near; put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are
standing is holy ground." And he said, "I am the God of your father, the
God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his
face, for he was afraid to look at God.

We have lost a sense of awe for God today. We have become so good at turning
God into our friend (God does love us without reservation), into our
personal Savior (Jesus of course knows us by name and has died for us), or
into our valet (we get angry when God does not work things out our way),
that we seem to have forgotten that God is, well .. God. Moses understood
the magnitude of God in relationship to himself. On the mountain at the
burning bush, Moses turned his own face away, because he was stunned by the
awesome presence of almighty God.

Awe created silence which in turned allowed Moses to listen to the voice of
God rather than be "in God's face." Stand in awe of the face of your God
today and spend more time listening than telling God what to do. You will be
surprised at the outcome.
