Daily Devotions Monday July 10, 2006

This week's devotions are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. Recently I read
that Americans work more hours per week than any nation on earth. Is it any
wonder that we are so frazzled? Let's take a look this week at what the
Bible says about rest.

Genesis 2:2-3

And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested
on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the
seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that
he had done in creation.

On my 16th birthday I came home after school to find my mother icing my
birthday cake. This was my day and I was glorying in it. As of today I could
drive a car by myself! I had a social security number (in those days you did
not get a SS card until you were 16). "Today I am a man," I declared to my
amused mother. She looked at me and said, "Yes you are. And now I want you
to drop your books and go apply for a part time job at three different
stores before you come home for your birthday celebration.

I was shattered. "You mean...work?" I exclaimed. I did as I was told and
within a week I was scrubbing floors and stocking shelves. I must admit it
was good for me and I did learn the value of a dollar. The problem is that
we begin to let work define us and manage our lives. This is not God's plan.

Genesis tells us that at the end of a creative work week, God rested. He did
not rest franticly (as we do all summer long with our never ending pastimes)
but simply rested. I believe he did this to enjoy the relationship he had
created with a whole new world of creatures. It says that God made a rest
day holy and special. It is a time to regain physical and emotional energy.
It is a holy time. This week, free up schedule and create some gaps where
you refuse to fill anything in (do not say that you can't) and be blessed by
rest.
