Daily Devotion Monday July 24, 2006

The devotions this week are written by Karen Ludwig to reflect a Hiker's
Lord's Prayer. Anyone who ventures into the outdoors may appreciate the
intent of this reflection, the result of a recent backpacking trip in the
Appalachian Mountains.

Our Father, who art in heaven-

>From the vantage point of Mary's rock, one of the highest elevations in
Shenandoah's park, one can see hill upon hill upon hill, until they meet at
the distant horizon. Specs of houses dot the hillsides, moving dots of cars
along Skyline Drive. The hiker is overwhelmed by insignificance: that of my
place in this vast landscape; as well as significance: Our Father in
heaven's role in creating it and gifting it to us to preserve and protect
even as he preserves and protects us.

What an important prayer opening-the significance of God's role as Creative
Father of the universe. Do we thank him for that? Do we keep our place in it
in perspective? Do we find in each day a vista of beauty that acknowledges
God the Creator's presence around us whether it be the breathtaking beauty
of Shenandoah Park, the bird's nest outside in the tree, the garden that
we tend and nurture, or the single tomato plant in a pot on our patio.

Thank you God for creating us to be in this wonderful world of yours.
