Daily Devotions Tuesday July 25, 2006
The devotions this week are written by Karen Ludwig to reflect a Hiker's
Lord's Prayer. Anyone who ventures into the outdoors may appreciate the
intent of this reflection, the result of a recent backpacking trip in the
Appalachian Mountains.
Hallowed be thy name-
On the Appalachian trail it is common for "thru hikers", those who are
traveling the entire distance from Georgia to Maine in a 5 t 6 month time
frame, to be given a trail name. On our recent trip, we encountered "Fire"
who had started on the trek with "Ice" but "Ice" left because it was too
much so "Wisp" and "Tooth Fairy" were walking along with "Fire". Names are
typically given to you because of something about you. You wear them with
pride for they acknowledge your presence as a "thru-hiker".
God's name should be hallowed because he, in the person of Jesus, has "thru
hiked" for us. Jesus hit the trail that began in Bethlehem and ended at the
cross. He encountered the bumps and bruises and bites the same as hikers,
and kept on going when many of the hikers who begin can't finish. He went
the distance for us, so that we wouldn't have to worry about making it
ourselves because the way is too hard, too rocky, too steep, too long.
Let us "hallow" his name, hold it in respect for all that it means to us and
for us: Our Savior!
