Daily Devotions Monday July 31, 2006
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry. In this week of record
high temperatures, he looks at Biblical references to heat.
Isaiah 25:4 (RSV)
"For thou hast been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in
his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat."
The first time I encountered "bottled water" was in the Holy Land in the
1970's. Born and raised in the "Great Lakes State" I was mortified that you
had to pay for water. I vowed that I would not spend a penny on water! And
so, stubborn and proud I drank local water at the site of Qumran. A good
case of dysentery, cured me once and for all of such pride!
It is hot and dry and the sun blazes with an intensity that is hard to
describe. Since there are few trees of any size, shade is a blessed gift!
Isaiah proclaims that God promises to stand by his people. He will keep
them from blowing away in a storm. He will give them shade when we are
tempted to wither in the heat of crisis. Today as you encounter the heat of
another day, don't forget to rest in the shade of God's grace.
