Daily Devotions Tuesday August 1, 2006
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry. In this week of record
high temperatures, he looks at Biblical references to heat.
Psalm 121:5-6
"The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The
sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night."
This is my favorite psalm and it has strengthened me during many a difficult
moment in my life. And yet, when my Mother was lost in dementia, it brought
little comfort as my Father asked why such a good Christian woman should
become so physically and emotionally "dried up" by a disease called
Alzheimer's. Indeed, for a time these words seemed empty as we all felt the
burning rays of this relentless withering.
It was only after my Mother had joined the church triumphant, that we could
see that God had been true to this promise. As Paul reminds us in 2
Corinthians 4:8-10,
"We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven
to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;
always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus
may also be manifested in our bodies."
We had been afflicted but not crushed. Life sent its worst against my
family, but with God's strength we stood; with God's shade we did not
wither. Whatever heat that you feel today, stand in the strength and shade
of a gracious God.
