Daily Devotions  Wednesday, June 14, 2006

This is the week of “The Holy Trinity.” The devotions this week will
highlight the Triune nature of our amazing God. The devotions are written by
Pastor Ludwig

 

Isaiah 6:1-4  (The Message paraphrase)

1-8 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Master sitting on a
throne—high, exalted!—and the train of his robes filled the Temple.
Angel-seraphs hovered above him, each with six wings. With two wings they
covered their faces, with two their feet, and with two they flew. And they
called back and forth one to the other, 
“Holy, Holy, Holy is God-of-the-Angel-Armies.  His bright glory fills the
whole earth.”
The foundations trembled at the sound of the angel voices, and then the
whole house filled with smoke. I said,  "Doom! It's Doomsday!  I'm as good
as dead!”

 

Thought

The prophet Isaiah had a revelation of God. He glimpsed the glory and
presence of almighty God. To a man living in the year, 742 BC, this majesty
was described in images of smoke and six-winged seraphs. The seraphs praise
God whose name is “Yahweh-Sabaoth” that is a designation for Yahweh, the
commander in chief.  Is it any wonder that Isaiah cried out, I’m as good as
dead!”

 

Why is it that we either fear God or try to tame God ?  Yes God is the
commander of heavenly armies (remember this is what Jesus told Pilate in the
Gospel of John), but he is not vengeful.  Yes God is capable of every sort
of miracle but not to entertain or pleasure us (remember how Jesus refused
to entertain Herod).

 

This God of smoke, heavenly warriors  and absolute rule, who scared the spit
out of Isaiah, has chosen to finally reveal himself in the person of his
Son, Jesus Christ. It is in his  death and resurrection that we learn the
truth,  “perfect love casts out all fear”  (I John  4:18).  Stand in awe of
God but do not fear an awful God. Believe that with God all things are
possible but do not make God a possibility if He empowers all your things. 

 

And above all, give thanks for you have seen God and discovered acceptance.
