Daily Devotions Thursday, June 15, 2006
This is the week of "The Holy Trinity." The devotions this week will
highlight the Triune nature of our amazing God. The devotions are written by
Pastor Ludwig
1 Kings 11 - 13 (RSV)
And he said, "Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD." And
behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains,
and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the
wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the
earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the
fire; and after the fire a still small voice. And when Eli'jah heard it,
he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of
the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him, and said, "What are you
doing here, Eli'jah?"
Thought
Where is God to be found? We live in a time and a culture that demands that
God is to be found in large things. For those who seek an angry God, he is
to be found in hurricanes and terrorist attacks. For those who are looking
for a sugar-daddy God, he is to be found in great material prosperity. For
those who are looking for a God is just like them, he is to be found as
their own inner voice. In the end as Elijah would learn on Mt. Horeb, these
are all false gods and are little more than the projection of our own
identities.
Where then is the true God to be found? You will never know until you stop
talking about yourself and listen for the "still small voice." It can be
heard from the quiet sounds of the baby in Bethlehem who was born in the
stable. It can be heard from the cries of desperation from the children of
modern Bethlehem who as Palestinians are being denied the opportunity to
grow up with a future. God can be seen in the faces of our own poor who are
more than ever being ignored because of funds being channeled to war.
Because God's son, Jesus took upon himself our face, our humanity, and
because Jesus has made humanity the top priority of those who believe in
him, we are pointed always to care for human need. Make a plan today to
spend some time with a hurting neighbor or friend. Take some time to write
your congress person about your feelings on a specific issue of social
justice. Open your wallet or purse and ask where that greenback might go to
put food before a hungry family. That is where God is to be found because it
is among such people and such issues where Jesus will be found.
P.S. No e-devotion tomorrow. I will be in Kentucky with our High School
Youth. Have a blessed weekend.
