Daily Devotions Tuesday June 27, 2006
This week's devotions are written by Seminarian, Kelsay Parker.
PRAYER PROMISES
This spring I served as a Chaplain intern at a nursing home and independent
Senior's apartment tower in downtown Minneapolis. One Thursday a month I
was invited into a ladies' prayer chain meeting. The women who prayed with
me were amazing. They believed that their prayers were heard, and needed!
Each time we met, we read scripture and then each woman would recite a
favorite "prayer promise." These promises remind us why we pray, and how
important it is to remain in conversation with God. Do you have a favorite
prayer promise? This week I will share some of my favorites. I encourage
you to meditate on the scripture and to pray with confidence however you
feel comfortable!
Romans 8:24-27
"For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes
for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it
with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not
know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too
deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of
the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the
will of God."
Prayer Promise: The Spirit intercedes when we do not know how to pray.
So often we are afraid to pray; afraid of sounding strange, afraid of saying
the wrong thing, afraid that God isn't listening. We are reminded in this
verse that we don't have to have it all together! In fact, it is often the
times when we have it together least that we need prayer the most. Pray
with abandon today - the Spirit is present, the Father is listening.
