Daily Devotion Wednesday June 28, 2006

This week's devotions are written by Seminarian, Kelsay Parker.

PRAYER PROMISES

This spring I served as a Chaplain intern at a nursing home and independent
Senior's apartment tower in downtown Minneapolis. One Thursday a month I
was invited into a ladies' prayer chain meeting. The women who prayed with
me were amazing. They believed that their prayers were heard, and needed!
Each time we met, we read scripture and then each woman would recite a
favorite "prayer promise." These promises remind us why we pray, and how
important it is to remain in conversation with God. Do you have a favorite
prayer promise? This week I will share some of my favorites. I encourage
you to meditate on the scripture and to pray with confidence however you
feel comfortable!

Psalm 139:1-4

O LORD, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and
when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my
path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a
word is on my tongue, O LORD, you know it completely.

The Promise: God knows us and hears the words of our prayers.

We are living in a "long-distance world." Advanced technology and modes of
transportation make it easy for us to be disconnected and distanced from our
friends and family. We have gotten good at long distance relationships, and
I believe that sometimes our relationship with God falls into that category.
It might be easy to think that an all-powerful God could never be intimately
connected with each human being.

The Psalm writer reminds us that our God is not contented to remain at a
distance. God knows us so well, loves us so deeply that he knows our every
thought and word before it even escapes our lips. Yes, our God comes
close.close enough to be one of us, to suffer for us, and to rescue us from
our long-distance world. Pray today believing that God sits beside you
listening - hearing every word and knowing you as his own child.
