Daily Devotions Friday June 30, 2006
This week's devotions are written by Seminarian, Kelsay Parker.
PRAYER PROMISES
This spring I served as a Chaplain intern at a nursing home and independent
Senior's apartment tower in downtown Minneapolis. One Thursday a month I
was invited into a ladies' prayer chain meeting. The women who prayed with
me were amazing. They believed that their prayers were heard, and needed!
Each time we met, we read scripture and then each woman would recite a
favorite "prayer promise." These promises remind us why we pray, and how
important it is to remain in conversation with God. Do you have a favorite
prayer promise? This week I will share some of my favorites. I encourage
you to meditate on the scripture and to pray with confidence however you
feel comfortable!
Matthew 6:9-13
"Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your
kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this
day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our
debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the
evil one."
I have been honored in my ministry thus far to have prayed this prayer with
many people. In a congregation of hundreds where my voice can barely be
heard, to close a small group Bible study where each emerges and disappears
at different times, and with dear souls who are barely awake in a hospital
bed and yet somehow move their lips silently into these precious words.
This prayer is a gift from Jesus. It binds us together in community, it
comforts us, it expresses our faith, and strengthens our hope. If you are
at a loss for words, return to this prayer, and pray with your fellow
Christians across continents and across centuries.
Thank you Jesus, for the gift of prayer.
Help us to pray always, trusting in your good promises.
Amen.
