Daily Devotions Monday March 6, 2006

The Daily Devotions are this week are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. During
the season of Lent, the theme of Zion's Wednesday services (5 & 7pm) is
based upon our congregational set of values. Those values flow from the
person and name of Jesus (Justice, Energy to witness, Spiritual maturity,
Understanding the radical nature of Grace, Service to those in need). This
week we explore Justice.

 

Deuteronomy 10:17-20

For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the
mighty, and the terrible God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.  He
executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the  sojourner,
giving him food and clothing.  Love the sojourner therefore; for you were
sojourners in the land of  Egypt.  You shall fear the LORD your God; you
shall serve him and cleave to  him, and by his name you shall swear.  

 

A year ago I was in one of those minor parking lot fender benders.
Curiously, we were both insured by the same agent.  The accident was not my
fault (it never is.is it?) and I had a witness as well. Because the other
party claimed it was my fault our company advised us to share the blame and
the deductible. We both agreed but neither of us believed that justice was
served.

 

God calls us to do justice, but what is it?  Is it having judgments go our
way? Is it what we define it to be?  In God's way of seeing things, justice
is about caring for the needs of the poor, the broken and the marginalized.
In ancient Israel that meant taking care of orphans, widows and foreigners
(sojourners) who come to our land looking for work.  This seems to fly in
the face of how we currently view immigrants, the unemployed and the
underemployed. It seems as though God's view of justice is quite different
from our own. Let us pray this Lent that God's justice might become our own.
