Daily Devotions Friday March 17, 2006
The Daily Devotions are this week are written by Pastor Dave Hendricks.
During the season of Lent, the theme of Zion's Wednesday services (5 & 7pm)
is based upon our congregational set of values. Those values flow from the
person and name of Jesus (Justice, Energy to witness, Spiritual maturity,
Understanding the radical nature of Grace, Service to those in need). This
week we explore Energy to Witness.
Luke 5:5-10
Simon answered, "Master, we have worked all night long but have caught
nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done
this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So
they signaled their partner in the other boat to come and help them. And
they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon
saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I
am a sinful man!" For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch
of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of
Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be
afraid; from now on you will be catching people."
Thought
Last Sunday I had the honor of working with the youth in the confirmation
program at Zion. We were ending our study on Holy Baptism. I tried to tell
the youth that we needed to live in the waters of our baptism all the time.
If we jump out of the waters of our baptism then we become like fish out of
water. (They understood that a fish out of water will suffocate and die.) I
also tried to teach them that we fish are now to fish for people who do not
live in the life-giving waters of baptism. I ended by telling them to "Go
Fish". (Some of them immediately asked me if I had any eights.)
I simply end this week of devotions with this declaration, "Go in peace. Go
fish and serve the Lord." I can only hope against hope that you know what
your response is.
Prayer
Father in heaven, for Jesus' sake, stir up in us the gift of your Holy
Spirit; confirm our faith, guide our lives, empower us in our serving, give
us patience in suffering, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen
