Daily Devotions Wednesday November 1, 2006
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. In this week
before All Saints Sunday Pastor Barry looks at some of the better known
quotes from famous Christians. Remember that to be a "saint" means to be set
aside by God for a special purpose. That includes the living and the dead.
That includes all who believe that Jesus is Lord. That includes you!
Saint Basil (329-379)
"Not the power to remember, but its very opposite, the power to forget, is a
necessary condition for our existence."
No one knew better the need to forget as a part of forgiving, than St.
Basil. He was born into a Christian family in Cappadocia within the pagan
Roman Empire. Christians were regularly persecuted, imprisoned and killed by
the authorities. His own grandmother had been put to death for believing
that Jesus was her Lord and Savior.
By the end of his life, Basil lived in a Christian Roman empire. The world
had been transformed not by followers of Jesus Christ who remembered past
offenses and held grudges but by a Christianity that followed the example of
their Lord who forgave and forgot old sins.
God has forgiven your sins of yesterday. God has done more than that, he has
forgotten them altogether. Is there someone in your life who needs your
forgiveness and forgetfulness? You have the power to transform those around
you in the name of Jesus Christ.
Jeremiah 31:33-34
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after
those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write
it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
31:34 No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know
the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the
greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember
their sin no more.
