Daily Devotions Tuesday November 7, 2006

The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. Having just
returned from a weekend in New York City where his oldest daughter ran in
the NYC marathon, he reflects upon the season of Thanksgiving.

Psalm 7:17

"I will give to the LORD the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will
sing praise to the name of the LORD, the Most High."

Karen and I just returned from an extended weekend in the city that never
sleeps. We went to watch our daughter run in the famed NYC marathon. I had
never been to the "Big Apple" before and it was an amazing experience. So
many people crammed together in such a small space made me somewhat
claustrophobic. It seemed to me that none of them wanted to go back to their
apartments since they seemed to swarm the streets all day and all night
long.

When we came to NYC they were gearing up for the marathon. As we left they
were gearing up for Thanksgiving. Macy's was stringing lights and putting
up Christmas trees in advance of their parade. The music had shifted from
European techno to "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire."

Like NYC we tend to turn on and off the thanksgiving button seasonally.
Perhaps that is because we see giving thanks as a response to receiving a
gift rather than as a response to the sheer amazing glory of God who
created and sustains us. The Psalmist calls us to thanksgiving not because
of what we have received but because of who our God is. Because our God is
righteous and almighty in patience and kindness we don't have to stay out on
the street. Thanks be to God.
