Daily Devotion Monday November 20, 2006
This week's devotions are written by Seminarian Kelsay Parker. The holidays
bring forth grief, anxiety, and stress in subtle ways: we feel the loss of
loved ones deeply, we mourn relationships that have been broken in our
lives, we worry about making ends meet, and we stress about the "perfect
party." This week's devotions are an opportunity to regroup, reflect, and
refocus on the heart of the holidays, the grace of God, the gift of Jesus.
My Song in the Night -Southern Folk Hymn
O Jesus my Savior, my song in the night,
Come to us with Thy tender love, my soul's delight
Unto Thee, O Lord, in affliction I call,
My comfort by day and my song in the night.
O why should I wander, an alien from Thee,
Or cry in the desert Thy face to see?
My comfort and joy, my soul's delight,
O Jesus my Savior, my song in the night.
Psalm 62: 1-2
"For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He
alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall never be shaken."
Cries from the desert, "How long O Lord?" Cries from captivity, "How can I
sing?" Cries of frustration, of anger, of hurt, of exhaustion, of
disappointment, of loneliness. Are these emotions a reality as you approach
Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas? There is hope, there is light, there
is a song in the night. That song is Jesus, our hope and our comfort. The
promise of healing, and of and new life comes to us in Jesus. May we never
forget Christ's continual presence in our lives.
