Daily Devotion Tuesday November 21, 2006

This week's devotions are written by Seminarian Kelsay Parker. The holidays
bring forth grief, anxiety, and stress in subtle ways: we feel the loss of
loved ones deeply, we mourn relationships that have been broken in our
lives, we worry about making ends meet, and we stress about the "perfect
party." This week's devotions are an opportunity to regroup, reflect, and
refocus on the heart of the holidays, the grace of God, the gift of Jesus.

Colossians 2:6-7

"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in
him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were
taught, and overflowing with thankfulness."

I'm easily distracted. One might say I am "spatially challenged" (read:
klutzy!) One thing I do on a regular basis is to get distracted as I'm
pouring a glass of milk or water. I begin to daydream and am called back to
reality by the milk or water that is running over my glass, onto the
counter, and down to the floor!!! OOPS! Now, this is just plain klutzy when
I do it.but this is the image used in Colossians to describe thankfulness!!!

Thankfulness is not a careful, exact activity that fills the glass
two-thirds of the way!! Thankfulness is complete and total abandon! It is
bubbling over, pouring out, spilling and flowing out EVERYWHERE!! It cannot
be contained!!! With this image of abundance comes a promise.it all begins
with Jesus. Even in the midst of dry times, when we haven't a *drop* of
thankfulness to muster, Jesus is there- and in him we are rooted, built up,
and strengthened. Whether or not your cup of thankfulness "runneth over"
this Thanksgiving, be assured that Jesus, the Living Water, has promised to
renew and sustain you.
