Daily Devotion Wednesday November 22, 2006
This week's devotions are written by Seminarian Kelsay Parker. The holidays
bring forth grief, anxiety, and stress in subtle ways: we feel the loss of
loved ones deeply, we mourn relationships that have been broken in our
lives, we worry about making ends meet, and we stress about the "perfect
party." This week's devotions are an opportunity to regroup, reflect, and
refocus on the heart of the holidays, the grace of God, the gift of Jesus.
Colossians 2:8-9
"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive
philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of
this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the
Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who
is the head over every power and authority."
If there is anything I've learned about enjoying a Thanksgiving meal it is
to BEWARE OF ROLLS!!! Oh, I know they look so good - fresh, warm, from the
oven.can't you just taste the butter as it melts into yummy bread. But
you've got to be careful, they are always sitting around before dinner
begins. If you overeat on those rolls, you won't have room for the rest of
the meal! You will be completely full before you even begin the meal!
In Colossians we are offered a similar warning."see to it that no one takes
you captive." What good advice for us as we celebrate these wonderful
holidays. It can be so easy to "fill up" on all the traditions that we
love: shopping, eating, drinking, sleeping. and these are wonderful ways to
celebrate. What would it mean to approach our celebrations and "save room"
for Jesus? "You have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over
every power and authority." May your celebrations be full! Full of family,
friends, relationships, traditions, and above all - full of the presence and
love of Christ. "Save room" and "fill up" on Jesus.
Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest and let thy gifts to us be blessed. Amen
