Daily Devotions Tuesday October 3, 2006

The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. He ponders the
passage of time.

Psalm 25:7

Remember not the sins of my youth, or my transgressions; according to thy
steadfast love remember me.

It is not they we sin more when we are young, we sin more boldly. We believe
that we aren't affecting the lives of others by what we say and do. In a
sense we see ourselves as the center of all things (I know some older adults
who have never gotten beyond this, don't you?). This lack of perspective,
thanks be to God, is usually more a function of age than intention. I have
a college friend who still refers to me as "Wally." I cringe every time he
calls me by that nickname because it is based upon a college prank that I
would rather forget. And it is my hope that I have grown beyond such things.

The psalmist reminds us that we can let go of the "sins of our youth"
because we have a God who remembers us not according to our acts of
foolishness but according to his steadfast love. The Hebrew word (hesed)
that is translated as steadfast love refers to God's covenantal
faithfulness. In other words, God keeps his promises even when we do not. We
can expect such graciousness from God in our youth and beyond as time
continues to pull us along.
