Daily Devotions Wednesday October 4, 2006
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. He ponders the
passage of time.
Ecclesiastes 4:13
Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who will no
longer take advice
It is like yesterday in my mind. I cannot tell you what I had for breakfast
this morning, but I perfectly remember the day that students at Kent State
were shot to death by their own National Guard soldiers as they demonstrated
on campus against an unpopular war. Young people who opposed the war were
called cowards and traitors and they were told to leave the country if they
could not agree with it. It was a time of national division and generational
mistrust. I waited for my draft number to come up as I wondered where it
would all lead. It seemed to me that the youth possessed a wisdom that
somehow had been lost by some of our elders and leaders. How strange and
surreal.
The "preacher" in Ecclesiastes reminds us that age is no guarantee of wisdom
and earthly authority is no assurance of righteousness. We should respect
our elders for that is right and decent but there are times when perhaps our
hearts should be attuned to the longing wisdom of youth which we once
possessed but has been narrowed over the years like cardiac arteries that
have endured far too many cheeseburgers and french fries.
Lord Jesus, forgive me for thinking that my age and experience carries an
importance which you have not granted. As you have taught, ( "unless you
become like a child you cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven" ), help me
to have the heart of a child and the hope of one who has lived in the shadow
of your grace for half a century. Amen.
