Daily Devotions Monday October 23, 2006
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. In this week
before reformation Sunday, Pastor Barry looks at some of the better known
quotes from the pen of Martin Luther (1483-1546).
Luther Quote
"Sin boldly, but more boldly have faith and rejoice in Christ."
When it comes to "sin" there does not seem to be any in-between today.
People either think of sin as some medieval church invention designed to
manipulate the minds and lives of people, or they are so burdened by their
sin that all joy has been sucked out of their life.
The risk of ignoring sin is that as individuals and as a society we lose the
virtue of humility and become a law unto ourselves. Such delusional thinking
has no need for forgiveness nor for Christ.
The result of sin without hope of forgiveness and resolution is a life of
going through the outward motions while slowly dying inside. Such despair
cannot find meaning in daily living that is complex and challenging.
Luther reminds us that we will sin (get rid of the personal pride). There is
no need to deny it or pretend that we are somehow morally superior than our
neighbor. Instead, knowing the forgiveness and love of God in Jesus Christ,
let us live fully and boldly. Confessing our sin, receiving forgiveness and
healing and rejoicing in the life which we have been given.
