Daily Devotions Tuesday October 24, 2006
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. In this week
before reformation Sunday, Pastor Barry looks at some of the better known
quotes from the pen of Martin Luther (1483-1546).
Luther Quote
"God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees, and flowers,
and clouds, and stars."
When I came home on Sunday afternoon, I was in one of those, "All is well
with the world" moods. For worshipping in a basement (the sanctuary is
under renovation), attendance was strong and worship was lively with great
music, wonderful scripture readings, a dramatic interlude rather than a
predictable sermon and of course Holy Communion. Pastors love Sundays like
that. It gets their mind off of church finances, staffing issues and
administration.
But I was not prepared for what I saw as I turned into my subdivision. It
was the most perfectly shaped maple tree in absolutely perfect fall color in
my neighbors' front yard (who happen to be members at Zion!). I almost ran
off of the pavement! It was stunning to see the sheer beauty and art of
this tree which God has created as a testament to divine power and intention
for our world. I immediately thought of the Luther quote above.
This week look at nature, and our galaxy and celebrate the good news that
God has stamped upon it. God is not only a powerful creator and a gifted
artist, God has endowed his creation with grace and beauty and meaning. God
is good!
