Daily Devotions Thursday October 26, 2006

The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. In this week
before reformation Sunday, Pastor Barry looks at some of the better known
quotes from the pen of Martin Luther (1483-1546).

Luther Quote

"If I am not allowed to laugh in heaven, I don't want to go there."

I can remember my first sermons in each of the three congregations I have
been privileged to serve. I told a humorous story in each of those sermons
(they were really funny) and the response from the pew was a mixture of
confusion and maintained solemnity. In one of the churches it took me a full
year to get them to laugh.

Why is it that we picture God in particular and religion in general as being
humorless? Various studies have begun to reveal the healing effects of humor
upon the individual. The very act of laughing together with another creates
a sense of well being and connectedness. Since we have a God of healing who
creates community, is it any wonder that in the Gospel of John the first
miracle which Jesus performed was that of turning water into wine at a
wedding party?

Laugh with your God today. Laugh at evil for it has no power over you. Laugh
with friends and family for it is healing and builds relationship.

Luke 6:21 [Jesus said] "Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall
laugh."

P.S.

A little girl was sitting on her grandfather's lap as he read her a bedtime
Bible story. From time to time, she would take her eyes off the book and
reach up to touch his wrinkled cheek. She was alternately stroking her own
cheek, then his again. Finally she spoke up, "Grandpa, did God make you?"
"Yes, sweetheart," he answered, "God made me a long time ago."
"Oh," she paused, "grandpa, did God make me too?"
"Yes, indeed, honey," he said, "God made you just a little while ago."
Feeling their respective faces again, she observed, "God's getting better at
it, isn't he ?"
