Daily Devotions Monday October 30, 2006

The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. In this week of
All Saints Day Pastor Barry looks at some of the better known quotes from
famous Christians. Remember that to be a "saint" means to be set aside by
God for a special purpose. That includes the living and the dead. That
includes all who believe that Jesus is Lord. That includes you!

St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226)

"Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words."

St. Francis understood that faith demanded action. Too often we turn faith
into an intellectual exercise or we think that it is a "get out of jail
free" card as in Monopoly. St. Francis was born into wealth but found little
meaning in his life of affluence. He renounced his inheritance, took a vow
of poverty and spent his life as an advocate for the poor. His followers
became known as "Franciscans."

We may not take a vow of poverty, you will likely not become a Franciscan,
but Jesus calls us to consider how we use the resources that He has
entrusted to us. Acts of generosity and charity to those in need carry more
power than all of the words ever spoken "about" God.

James 2:15-17

If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to
them, "Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill," and yet you do not supply
their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has
no works, is dead.
