Daily Devotions Tuesday October 31, 2006

The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry Ludwig. In this week
before All Saints Sunday Pastor Barry looks at some of the better known
quotes from famous Christians. Remember that to be a "saint" means to be set
aside by God for a special purpose. That includes the living and the dead.
That includes all who believe that Jesus is Lord. That includes you!

Saint Augustine (354-430)

"Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything
depended on you."

St. Augustine was a professor of philosophy and rhetoric. His mother was
Christian, his father a pagan. In his young adulthood he embraced
Manichaeism, a strange Persian mystery religion. Through the prayers of his
mother and the work of the Holy Spirit, he became a Christian and ultimately
one of the greatest bishops in the history of Christianity.

Augustine's quote reminds us that it does not depend upon "me." There are
times when our boss makes us think that it does. There are times when our
family makes us think that it does. There are times when we make ourselves
think that it depends upon us. After all, weren't we taught as children
that, "if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself"? It is no
wonder we are so tired, so anxious, and at times depressed?

Our fifth century saint reminds us that this is not true for the follower of
Jesus. God expects us to do the best we can with what we have received and
God will do the rest. Have a full day today. Fully partnered with your
gracious God.

Matthew 28:20

[Jesus said to his disciples] "And remember, I am with you always, to the
end of the age."
