Daily Devotions Monday September 11, 2006

The devotions this week have been written by Shelley Klippel, Director of
Contemporary Music Ministries at Zion.

Ephesians 1:7-8

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in
accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all
wisdom and understanding.

The Duke of Wellington

In the 1800's, the Duke of Wellington was about to pass the death sentence
on a soldier who had deserted. He commented that he was sorry about what he
was about to do, but that none of the discipline or penalties tried in the
past had improved the soldier's behavior. He then invited the soldier's
piers to speak on his behalf. One of them said, "Sir, there is one thing
you have not tried. You have not tried forgiving him." These words moved
Wellington to forgive the soldier, and he never deserted again, and always
showed his appreciation to the Duke.

Like the soldier, we each have behaviors that we keep repeating; even though
we know it is not God's will. God doesn't need anyone to suggest
forgiveness, though. He forgives us willingly and repeatedly. Thanks be to
God!

Let us pray. Father, I ask you to help me be generous when I think of the
attitudes and actions of others. For what I have done wrong, Lord, forgive
me to the extent that I am generous in forgiving-or hoping to forgive-those
who have done wrong to me. Amen.
