Daily Devotions Tuesday September 12, 2006
The devotions this week have been written by Shelley Klippel, Director of
Contemporary Music Ministries at Zion.
Romans 6:18-19 (The Message)
"All your lives you've let sin tell you what to do. But thank God you've
started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live
openly in his freedom! I'm using this freedom language because it's easy to
picture. You can readily recall, can't you, how at one time the more you did
just what you felt like doing-not caring about others, not caring about
God-the worse your life became and the less freedom you had? And how much
different is it now as you live in God's freedom, your lives healed and
expansive in holiness?"
Michelangelo was once asked what he was doing as he stared at a block of
marble. He replied, "I can see an angel imprisoned in the marble, and I
must set it free." I wonder if God has similar thoughts when he looks at
us. What does he see in each of us that he has given so freely of his love
and forgiveness when we are so obviously not worthy of it? When I think of
God looking at me and seeing the saint that is buried underneath all of my
sins, it humbles me. It makes me want to serve him and spread his love to
those around me, so they can feel that kind of unconditional love, too.
Let us pray. Father, give us the power of your Spirit so that we can see
and love in others what you see and love in them. Help us to bring out the
best in each other and to live this day as you would like us to live. Amen.
