Daily Devotions Friday September 15, 2006
The devotions this week have been written by Shelley Klippel, Director of
Contemporary Music Ministries at Zion.
Romans 4:13-16
It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise
that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes
by faith. For if those who live by law are heirs, faith has no value and
the promise is worthless, because law brings wrath. And where there is no
law there is no transgression. Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so
that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring-not
only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of
Abraham. He is the father of us all.
In a time when so many voices are pointing out how we are all different from
each other, I try to remind myself of the things that tie us together
through God's grace. For example, Abraham ties Christians together with the
religions of Judaism and Islam. He is claimed by each one of these
religions as the father of their faith. We are also connected to Jews and
Muslims by the practice of prayer. Five times a day, devout Muslims start
their prayers with Arabic words that translate into: "In the name of God,
the Merciful, the Compassionate." So we are also connected through our
belief that God is merciful and compassionate.full of grace.
Let us pray this Universal Prayer for Peace to the God of our fathers.
"Lead me from death to life, from falsehood to truth. Lead me from despair
to hope, from fear to trust. Lead me from hate to love, from war to peace.
Let peace fill our heart, our world, our universe."
The story behind the Prayer for Peace
In July 1981, Mother Teresa gave the first public pronouncement of what is
known as the 'Universal Prayer for Peace'. This took place at the Anglican
St. James' Church, Piccadilly in London. This well-known 'Prayer," 'was
designed to be truly international - a prayer which would be capable of
transcription into any language and in supplication to any god.
A little research reveals that this 'prayer' was originally adapted by the
former Jain monk and environmentalist, Satish Kumar, from a mantra in the
Indian Hindu Upanishads. The Upanishads are essentially monistic treatises,
secret Hindu doctrines, written from 800-400 B.C.
