Daily Devotions Friday September 22, 2006
The devotions this week have been written by Carol Sue Brodbeck, Director of
Caring and Sharing Ministries at Zion.
I am so overjoyed when I see people happily engaged in the ministries of
Zion. Whether they are setting up for worship, working in the office,
mowing the lawn, ushering, singing or playing an instrument, teaching,
leading a small group, visiting/calling the homebound, building the habitat
home, moving items out of rooms being renovated, providing donuts or
lemonade on Sunday mornings, taking goodies to the men under the bridge,
serving as an elected leader, needle-pointing the new kneeling cushions,
knitting or crocheting shawls or baby blankets, mentoring at-risk children,
praying for others, or whatever, I am reminded how God has led them to serve
in such a manner. When asked if they would do thus and such, these
"ministers" could have said, "Sorry but I don't have the time", but they
didn't. God endowed them with those Gifts that these ministers needed to do
God's work. These Gifts were not earned nor deserved, but given freely by
God. And now, those ministers are serving God by serving others. Thanks to
all of you who serve as ministers both inside and outside of Zion.
Before I made you in your mother's womb, I chose you. (Jeremiah 1:5)
A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire
church.
(1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT)
Christ gave those gifts to prepare God's holy people for the work of
serving, to make the body of Christ stronger. (Ephesians 4:11-12)
The Spirit has given each of us a special way of serving others. (1
Corinthians 2:7 CEV)
Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not
all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body and
each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according
to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in
proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is
teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is
contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is
leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it
cheerfully. (Romans 12:3-8)
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others,
faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. (1 Peter 4:10)
God is working in you to help you want to do and be able to do what pleases
him. (Philippians 2:13)
Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given,
and then sink yourself into that. (Galatians 6:4 MSG)
Lord, I will humbly do whatever you need, regardless of the obstacles that I
may encounter and/or will go wherever you need me. I know that I won't have
to do it by myself because I believe that you have given me those gifts that
I need to do the work and will lead me and give me the words to speak.
Lord, here I am. If you need me, just ask. Amen.
