During this holiest week of the church year, we shall be looking at the
Gospel text for that day assigned by the historic lectionary (Scripture
readings) cycle of the church. May you use a moment each day to prepare for
the remembering of what Christ has done for you.
John 12: 20-26 (NRSV)
Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks.
They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him,
"Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and
Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the
Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat
falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it
dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who
hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves
me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever
serves me, the Father will honor.
Jesus gives us everything and asks only that we seek to live in a way that
is consistent with his teaching and his life. He does not ask for us to be
perfect, but he does desire for us to be honest. He does not demand complete
wisdom and spiritual maturity from us, but he has taught us to trust his
guidance. He tells us that if we claim him as Lord, we must follow him, not
the wisdom of Wall Street or even Capitol Hill and certainly not Hollywood.
This week, let's pay special attention to the lifestyle of Jesus and ask the
question, are my priorities and perspectives reflective of the one who bore
the cross for me?
