Daily Devotion Wednesday February 7, 2007
The devotions this week are prepared by Pastor Ludwig. He explores some of
the outrageous statements of Jesus.
Luke 6:27-29
"But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate
you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To him who
strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away
your coat do not withhold even your shirt."
When I was in grade school, there was a bully who always picked on me. In
desperation I asked my father for advice. "Hit him back," he said, "you have
to stand up to bullies." The next day after following my Father's advice, I
found myself flattened on the ground. I determined it was time for a new
plan.
Jesus' plan is not one of rolling over and playing dead in the face of
aggressors, but it is equally not a matter of hitting back or "doing" them
before they "do" you. He proposed a radical alternative, an assertive
non-violent response.
This counter-intuitive course of action led to a cross but ended at the
resurrection. This February how can we not also think of a disciple of
Christ, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who followed this teaching and forever
altered the course of American social history. Today, try non-violent
thinking, speaking and acting and see where Jesus will lead you.
