The devotions this week are prepared by Pastor Ludwig.
Mark 1:14-15
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good
news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has
come near; repent, and believe in the good news."
This morning on NPR, there was a short piece on Hillary Clinton's early
campaigning for the presidential nomination. A rally "attendee" was asked if
he was pleased. He responded that he would be pleased when she finally
admitted that she was wrong when she endorsed the Iraq war. Of course that
will not happen. An act of repentance in politics is a fast track to defeat.
Jesus tells us in chapter one of Mark that in the kingdom of God, repenting
is the only track to believing. It is not a momentary flash of regret nor a
long term wallowing in all of our mistakes. No, it is a daily, honest and
open process of taking stock of our thoughts, actions and inactions. It is
a willingness to think about how we live and what we have learned from the
life of Jesus. It is a process that leads to change.
The word "repentance" in the first century Greek of the New Testament
("Metanoia") means a change of thinking (mind). Perhaps there are some
things today that require a change of mind on your part? Change is good.
