DAILY DEVOTION TUESDAY FEBRUARY 27, 2007
This week Pastor Barry explores the Biblical theme of "rest."
Exodus 23:12
"Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall rest, so
that your ox and your donkey may have relief, and your home-born slave and
the resident alien may be refreshed."
Several years ago I spoke to our staff about the need to establish
appropriate boundaries between professional ministry and time for personal
and family life. Too often, church professionals do not differentiate and
practically speaking, wind up "working" all the time. I explained how
important it was for the staff to have balance in their life between the
work of ministry and rest.
After the staff meeting, one of our staff members took me aside and said,
"It is hard for us to be restful when we see your car always here and your
light always on." It had never occurred to me that my own lack of balance
would have more power than my words and teaching. I should have known that
the "do as I say not as I do" formula simply doesn't work.
In the Exodus text we are told to rest so that those who depend on us can
also rest. When we are out of balance, it has an impact upon our friends,
family, and work partners. Today give thought to how you might gift those
around you by finding time for rest.
