The devotions this week have been prepared by Pastor Ludwig

As we begin a new year, let's look at what God's word has to say about the
idea of newness from a faith perspective.

Isaiah 43:18-21 (RSV)

"Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I
am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will
make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild beasts will
honor me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness,
rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I
formed for myself that they might declare my praise."

I don't know about you but I have a long memory when it comes to past events
that brought hurt or disappointment. It is not my nature to stay angry or
to hold grudges against others (for that I am thankful), but past pains can
still raise up anxiety in me if I allow them to preoccupy my thinking. I can
still remember my pain when Hazel (she was a gorgeous redhead) jilted me in
the first grade.

God speaks through the prophet Isaiah to assure us that we are not bound to
our past (not even yesterday). We are a people of God's promise who live
each day in a new day of forgiveness and possibility. As we begin a new
year, practice letting go of yesterday and using your energy to look at the
new thing that God has in store for you today. That new thing is like water
flowing in the desert.
